Practice the liberal arts of listening, 说话, reading and 写作 as well as the habits of reflective, critical 思考

The 伟大的著作 minor provides Quincy University students from any major the opportunity to consult the great intellectual works of our human heritage about the core dilemmas that confront our species. 伟大的著作 classes employ close readings of classic texts and in-depth class discussions of the themes therein. Through this program, students build cultural literacy while strengthening their reading, 写作, 思考, and 说话 skills.

Students will learn the meaning of, 的目的, and habits required for liberal education, and practice the close reading of a Great Book and the seminar-style discussion of that text and its themes.

Learning Objectives

  • Compare, contrast, and synthesize arguments from thinkers across the 伟大的著作.
  • Write a scholarly-article length research paper.
  • 应用 the analyses and lessons of the 伟大的著作 to contemporary issues.
  • Build rhetorical and critical 思考 skills by responding to and posing Socratic questioning.
  • Build cultural literacy.
  • 艺术iculate the meaning of liberal education and the place of the 伟大的著作 therein
  • Evaluate the relevance of the 伟大的著作 to their academic major.
